The Zarb School of Business Alumni Association hosted a networking reception, “Networking to Career Transition: Success Stories,” on August 26, 2009, at the historic Barbetta Restaurant in New York City. Nearly 90 alumni attended and had an opportunity to hear alumna Diane Garnick (B.B.A., ’96), Howard Cross, former New York Giants tight end who currently works with real estate purveyor FirstService Williams, and Eric Schiff, former director of national accounts for ADP who currently is an entrepreneur and creator of ibidmotors.com.

September 9, 2009: Zarb Graduate Students Attend First Asian M.B.A. Leadership Conference

Four officers from the Zarb Asian Student Association attended the first Asian M.B.A. Leadership Conference in New York City. More than 2,500 business leaders and students from the pan-Asian community came together to be part of the largest professional development, recruiting and networking event.

September 23, 2009: Zarb Executive Speaker Series Presents John Eckman, Senior Director of Optaros Lab

On September 23, 2009, the IT/QM Department in conjunction with Graduate Business Career Services hosted John Eckman, senior director of Optaros Labs, who spoke to students, faculty and administrators on “How Businesses Leverage the Web.” Mr. Eckman has more than a decade of experience designing and building Web applications for organizations ranging from small, nonprofit organizations to Fortune 500 companies.

September 24, 2009: Accounting and Finance Career Fair

The Hofstra Career Center and Beta Alpha Psi hosted the annual Accounting and Finance Career Fair, which was sponsored by PricewaterhouseCoopers. Approximately 40 firms participated, including the Big Four accounting firms, and other national and local accounting firms.

September 25, 2009: Journal of International Business and Law Conference

Richard Gray (B.B.A., ‘85), director of marketing and client services at Ramius LLC, and his colleague Norman Milner presented an in-depth discussion on the hedge fund process with approximately 20 finance students. A cocktail reception followed.

September 30, 2009: Zarb Alumni Networking Reception at Fraunces Tavern

On Wednesday, September 30, 2009, the Zarb Alumni Association hosted a night of networking in Manhattan’s financial district at Fraunces Tavern. In attendance were nearly 70 alumni from the graduating classes of 1969 through 2009, representing nearly every area of business.

The Zarb School kicked off the fall semester with the Zarb Welcome Back Barbecue where more than 250 students enjoyed socializing with friends, faculty, administrators and alumni.

Arlene Johnson, author of Success Mapping and president of Sinequanon Group, Inc., spoke at a Zarb Executive Speaker event sponsored by the Graduate Business Career Services Office. Ms. Johnson took students through the experience of mapping out a path to career success by setting goals, defining obstacles and creating motivation. More than 100 students and administrators were present.

On October 26, 2009, the Zarb School and the Institute of Real Estate at Hofstra University hosted the seminar “Real Estate and Other Investments: 2009 and Beyond.” The seminar featured Scott Rechler, chairman and chief executive officer of RXR Realty and Dr. Robert H. Edelstein, Maurice Mann chair in real estate at the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley, who gave the keynote addresses. Ten other leading real estate professionals spoke at three consecutive panels during the seminar.

October 28, 2009: Black & Hispanic M.B.A./M.S. Association Presents Karen Nethersole, CEO and Founder of Full Circle

Karen Nethersole, Esq., spoke to graduate students on October 28, 2009. Her presentation, “Next Step: The Move From College Graduate to Successful Professional,” focused on the importance of developing and maintaining a positive personal brand and networking.

October 28, 2009: Zarb Executive Speaker Series Presents Stephen Bozzo, Senior Vice President/Chief Information Officer, 1-800-FLOWERS.COM

On October 28, 2009, Senior Vice President/Chief Information Officer Stephen Bozzo of 1-800-FLOWERS.COM delivered an interactive presentation on all aspects of IT planning, development, delivery management, infrastructure and e-commerce to more than 50 Zarb undergraduate and graduate students interested in IT-related careers. Prior to joining 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, Mr. Bozzo served as vice president and CIO of the International Division of MetLife Insurance Company, where he oversaw MetLife locations in 17 countries.

The M.B.A./M.S. Hofstra Indian Students Association organized a wonderful celebration of Diwali Dhoom, a very important festival in Hinduism, Sikhism and Jainism. Known as the "Festival of Lights," it symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and lamps are lit as a sign of celebration and hope for mankind. More than 70 students, administrators and faculty enjoyed dancing, singing and traditional foods.

The Graduate Business Career Services Office presented Michael Venuti who discussed “A Story of Success: Learn How to Grow a Major Business.” Mr. Venuti discussed the success story behind Vitamin Water brand that led to its sale for $4 billion to Coca-Cola. More than 85 students, faculty and administrators attended. The event was sponsored by the M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association.

December 2, 2009: The National Association of Black Accountants and the Financial Management Association Present “Financial Literacy: Know How to Manage Your Money”

NABA and the FMA presented “Financial Literacy: Know How to Manage Your Money” on December 2, 2009, featuring Cesar Garcia, president and CEO of Mayorial Global, and Jim Ryan, author and motivation speaker. They presented valuable information to students on many timely topics, including building and reestablishing credit, personal finances and budgeting, identify theft, savings and banking, and dealing with financial stress.

December 4, 2009: Zarb International M.B.A./M.S. Association Semi-Formal 2009

Zarb graduate business students and administrators enjoyed an evening full of international cuisine, music and dance performances organized by the Zarb International M.B.A./M.S. Association with the assistance of the M.B.A./M.S. Black and Hispanic Association.

December 9, 2009: Capital One Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge Kick-off

On December 9, 2009, students from the Zarb School and Uniondale High School presented their business plans to a team of judges from Capital One. Funded by a generous donation from Capital One, the Campus Entrepreneurial Challenge is a collaborative program that provides students with the unique opportunity to design and run their own businesses. Mentored by Capital One bankers, students formulated three new ventures: SMF Fashion, The Game Room, and Tutoring Wizards.

December 9, 2009: BNY Mellon Presents White Paper at Zarb Executive Speaker Series

The Zarb School and its Center for International Financial Services and Markets hosted an Executive Speaker Series on Wednesday, December 9, 2009. Orla Nallon, managing director, BNY Mellon, presented the bank’s latest white paper, “The Hedge Fund of Tomorrow: Building an Enduring Firm.”
This report is the third collaboration between BNY Mellon and Casey Quirk after “Institutional Demand for Hedge Funds: New Opportunities and New Standards” in 2004 and “Institutional Demand for Hedge Funds II: The Global Perspective” in 2006, which were previously presented at the Zarb School.

The annual fall induction dinner for Beta Alpha Psi, the national honor society for financial information professionals, was held December 10, 2009. The event was sponsored by KPMG, LLP. Following remarks by Dr. Nathan Slavin, chairperson, Department of Accounting, Taxation and Legal Studies in Business, Arielle T. Geffner, president, Delta Pi chapter, introduced the guest speaker. Anthony N. Dalessio (B.B.A., ’75), advisory partner, KPMG, LLP, addressed the audience on the current state of the accounting profession. Twelve scholarships and awards were presented, and new student inductees were introduced.

December 11, 2009: Graduate Student Advisory Board Recognition Dinner

In honor of the dedication of 45 graduate business student association leaders, Graduate Business Career Services held a dinner for all active student leaders and recognized graduating students. In addition, special recognition went to Himani Sharma (M.B.A., Finance,’09) for exceptional leadership of the M.B.A./M.S. Association and the Hofstra Graduate Finance Association and to Nancy Schulman (M.B.A., Accounting, ’09) with a Certificate of Appreciation for her contribution to Zarb Women in Business and dedication to supporting all graduate business associations.

The Zarb School’s Finance Department, under the direction of Dr. Nancy White and Dr. Ahmet Karagozoglu, hosted the third annual Hofstra/CME Group High School Commodities Challenge. Twenty-four students, representing 10 Long Island high schools, participated in a two-part program to introduce students to the commodities market. The first part consisted of an electronic trading competition; in the second part, students simulated open-outcry trading. Held in the Greenberg Trading Room, this program extends the Zarb School’s efforts to provide Long Island students with business education beyond the high-school level.
