February 3: Hofstra University and the Alumni Organization present “Leadership and Innovation in a Globally Interconnected World”

Hofstra University and the Alumni Organization presented “Leadership and Innovation in a Globally Interconnected World” at Ernst & Young on Thursday, February 3, 2011. Participants enjoyed a conversation and reception with Ajay Banga, president and chief executive officer, MasterCard Worldwide, Inc. and Steven J. Freiberg (B.B.A. ’79; M.B.A ’80), chief executive officer, ETrade Financial Corp. Frank G. Zarb (B.B.A. ’57; M.B.A. ’62), managing director, Hellman and Friedman, LLC, moderated the event.


February 9: Zarb School of Business Alumni Association Resume Critique and Reception

The Zarb School of Business Alumni Association, in conjunction with The Career Center, conducted a resume critique and reception for students to have their resumes reviewed by industry professionals. More than 35 Zarb students had their resumes reviewed by 12 alumni volunteers.


February 9: Distinguished Lecture Series Breakfast: Russell M. Artzt Presents “Cloud Computing Made Possible”

Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz and Richard Guardino, vice president for business development, sponsored this distinguished lecture on the timely topic of cloud computing.  The keynote address was presented by Russell M. Artzt, founder and vice chairman of CA Technologies, who discussed cloud computing and its incremental advance in the field of information technology, representing a paradigm shift in the IT industry. Mr. Artzt is responsible for defining and directing overall corporate objectives and providing visionary leadership for technology, products and programs. Mr. Artzt collaborates with the company’s board of directors, president, executive leadership team, and shareholders to drive strategic, operational and financial needs.


February 15: Diversity in the Workplace Series

As part of black history month, the Zarb Black and Hispanic M.B.A./M.S. Association  co-sponsored a panel discussion about minorities in the workplace with The Career Center. The keynote speaker for the event was Keith Clinkscales, senior vice president, content development & enterprises, at ESPN.  Panelists included: Takita Mason (B.A. ’01), senior account director, Working Mother Media and president of Hofstra’s Black/Hispanic Alumni Association; Christina Whitehurst (B.B.A. ’02), assistant controller, Real Estate Capital Partners; and Frederick Davis (B.B.A. ’85), partner, Mitchell & Titus and president of Hofstra’s Alumni Organization.

February 17: 18th Annual Columbia Women in Business Conference

On February 18, 2011, members of Zarb Women in Business attended the Annual Columbia Women in Business Conference. The theme for the event was “Mapping the Future: Dynamic Paths to Success.” The panelists at the conference discussed the diverse paths successful women in business have taken over the course of their careers.

February 25: Graduate Finance Association and Hofstra Investment Banking Association Host Networking Night

The Graduate Finance Association organized a networking reception at 230 Fifth Lounge in New York City that brought together current graduate business students and alumni from various fields of finance.

February 26: Social Gaming Event

Hosted by Zarb Women in Business in conjunction with the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, a group of 30 students from Hofstra and India communicated through web conferencing. Five social games were created that consisted of questions related to mapping and territory, taking into consideration the physical, digital and social environment of each location.

February 28: Zarb School of Business Alumni Association Mock Interviews

Zarb School of Business alumni spent a day at Hofstra conducting 30-minute mock interviews to provide students with tips on how to ace an interview. Almost 60 Zarb students were interviewed by 15 alumni volunteers.

March 2: Professional Etiquette Dinner  

Hosted by the Zarb Asian Students Association (ZASA) in conjunction with the Graduate Finance Association, Dianne Weinstein from Cobalt Solutions gave a presentation on business dinner etiquette and how to best present oneself in front of potential employers.


March 7:  Night of Networking and Communication

Co-sponsored by Zarb Women in Business, the M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association, the Hofstra American Marketing Association and the Zarb Alumni Association, undergraduate students and recent graduates interacted with some of Hofstra's most successful alumnae working in various fields of the media and communications industry.  The keynote speaker was Celia Burke (B.F.A. ’79), chief talent officer, Young & Rubicam Brands. March 9:  Consumerology: The New Retail Rules and the New Consumer

At a presentation to students, Marshal Cohen, chief industry analyst, NPD Group and author of the book Buy Me! How to Get Customers to Choose Your Products and Ignore the Rest provided insight into the apparel, footwear and accessories markets.  Mr. Cohen is a nationally known expert on consumer behavior and the retail industry.  Representatives from NPD were available at the event to discuss job and internship opportunities.

March 9:  Finance Management Association (FMA) Hosts Faces of Finance

On March 9, 2011, the FMA presented “Faces of Finance,” which included a keynote address by Reginald Andre (B.B.A.’04) followed by a panel discussion.  All participants were Zarb alumni.  Gioia P. Bales (M.B.A. ’86), assistant dean, moderated the event.  Reginald Andre is a vice president at Goldman Sachs in their alternative investments division.  The other panelists were: Janice McFadden (B.B.A.’87/M.B.A. ’92), vice president and senior trader at Goldman Sachs Investment Partners; Steven Alves (B.B.A. ’07), assistant vice president and relationship manager at HSBC Bank; and Omar Khawaja (B.B.A. ’04), manager of hedge fund operations at Luxor Capital Group LP.

March 9: Panel Discussion on Strategies and Challenges Faced in Social Media

Ezor, director, Touro Law Center, Institute for Business, Law and Technology; Hilary Topper, president & CEO, HJMT Communications; and David Rodriguez, director of staffing, Cablevision.

March 10:  Lightship Partners Information Session

Lightship Partners LLC’s CEO, Mike Beller, and partner, Jean Hannon, visited Hofstra to discuss the firm, its various projects, and exciting internship opportunities.  The company is a Long Island-based management consulting firm.


March 16:  Zarb Women in Business Presents Women With Wings

March 23:  Executive Speaker Series — Todd Jacobson, National Basketball Association (NBA)

On March 23, 2011, the Zarb Corporate Social Responsibility Association hosted Todd Jacobson, vice president of community relations for the National Basketball Association.  Mr. Jacobson discussed how the NBA views its responsibility as a corporate citizen, what initiatives it has taken to further its corporate social responsibility goals, and how these initiatives fit into its broader business plan.

March 25:  Networking Event and Seminar on "Talkpower" — A Panic Clinic for Fearless Communication by Natalie H. Rogers

On March 25, 2011, the Zarb Toastmasters International hosted Natalie H. Rogers, an actress, behavioral psychotherapist, professional trainer and author of The New Talkpower. Ms. Rogers’ presentation was aimed at helping students overcome the nervousness associated with public speaking.  Students had the opportunity to network with Ms. Rogers, Dean Patrick J. Socci and Zarb faculty.

March 25: M.B.A./M.S. Indian Student Association Presents Rang-A-Holi — Festival of Colors

The Indian Student Association celebrated an Indian religious festival.  Also known as “Dhuli Vandana” in the Sanskrit language, the festival is celebrated by throwing colored powder and water at each other. The students enjoyed the evening, which included traditional Indian food.

March 30: Expert Voice: The Emerging Power of Social Media

Sponsored by the Hofstra M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association, “Expert Voice: The Emerging Power of Social Media” was a major-related event featuring Hofstra alumna Eve Fish (B.A. ’96/M.B.A. ’99), senior director of online marketing development, Publishers Clearing House.

March 30:  Microfinance Club Presents Erica Dorn, Head of Volunteering Activities, Accion USA
Accion USA is a microfinance organization that offers microloans and other financial services to moderate-income entrepreneurs in the United States. Ms. Dorn presented her views on the history of Accion USA and U.S. microfinance, the programs and services offered by the company, and various partnerships in U.S. microfinance.  The M.B.A./M.S. Microfinance Club is the newest graduate organization at the Zarb School.

March 31: South Asian Students Association Presents Talent Show

Hofstra clubs, organizations, and individuals performed their unique talents, which included group acts and solo performances. The winners received $300 for the club they represented, and 50 percent of the proceeds were donated to the Sunkara Eye Foundation.

April 6: Lunch and Learn: The Gender Factor in Business and Finance

The Center for International Financial Services and Markets hosted a luncheon discussion on “The Gender Factor in Business and Finance With Emphasis on Women as Executives and Businesspeople.”  The group discussed recent research that studies the impact women in corporate leadership positions and on boards of directors have on company and investment performance.  The keynote speaker was Dr. Esmeralda Lyn, vice dean and the C.V. Starr Distinguished Professor in Finance and International Financial Services.

April 6:  M.B.A/M.S. Corporate Connections/Networking Program

Alumni and employers from diverse industries, especially finance and information technology, shared their career paths and hiring needs for full-time and internship positions at this program sponsored by the Graduate Finance Association and the Hofstra Information Technology Graduate Association. Representatives from companies such as OpenLink Financial, Sungard, Chase Auto Finance, All Scripts, United Way, North Shore Health System, Northrop Grunman and Cognizant were present.

April 6: Managing Portfolio Risk in Natural Disasters: A Playbook for Black Swan Events

“Managing Portfolio Risk in Natural Disasters: A Playbook for Black Swan Events” was sponsored by GARP – the Global Association of Risk Professionals.  The speaker for the event was Kenneth R. Solow, CFP, founding partner and chief investment officer of Pinnacle Advisory Group, Inc, a private wealth management firm.  GARP, the leading professional association dedicated to the advancement of the risk position, established a chapter at Hofstra in 2008.

April 7:  Hofstra American Marketing Association (HAMA) Second Annual Networking Dinner

This event featured prominent marketing professionals from Victoria’s Secret, Slightly Mad Communications and other companies.  This event was an excellent networking opportunity for the undergraduate students at the Zarb School of Business.

April 8:  Impact of Human Resources’ Role in Any Organization & Careers in Human Resource Management

Sponsored by Zarb Human Resources Management Association.  The speaker for the event was Laura Lack, vice president, Human Resources Management, Lord & Taylor.

The audience learned how to effectively respond to a crisis by observing a panel of experienced professionals in action.  The program moderator was Richard Torrenzano, chief executive officer of The Torrenzano Group, a global expert in crisis communications.  Mr. Torrenzano presented a corporate crisis and the panelists, assuming senior-level positions in the organization, responded on stage.  The participants included: Thomas S. Johnson, retired chairman and CEO, GreenPoint Bank; Douglas L. Main, former CFO, IBM and MCI Communications; Cono R. Fusco, retired managing partner, Strategic Partnerships, Grant Thornton; Scott E. April 12: A Conversation About Writing in the Workplace with MTV's Robyn DeMarco

Robyn DeMarco is senior vice president of programming and development strategy at MTV.  In this position, she oversees MTV’s program schedule and content strategy.  Miss DeMarco spoke about the importance of good writing in the creative and business world. 

April 13:  Frank Catalanotto of the New York Mets

Frank Catalanotto spoke about his experiences in Major League Baseball and sports marketing.  He played major league basketball from 1997–2010 when he retired from the New York Mets.  He played for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays during his career.

The Hofstra M.B.A./M.S. Marketing Association and Zarb Graduate Human Resource Management Association hosted Matthew McCarthy (M.B.A. ’97) who spoke to graduate business students about trends in brand management. Mr. McCarthy, currently senior director of marketing at Unilever, was also part of brand development at AXE products.

Hofstra University and Capital One Bank  launched “Money & Me” a program designed to bring financial literacy into the classroom and provide fourth graders with money management skills.  Marsha Iverson, associate professor, School of Education, Health and Human Services and Gioia P. Bales, assistant dean, Zarb School of Business, serve as the program directors.

The Money & Me interactive curriculum incorporates mathematics and ELA concepts, as well as practical applications, through lessons that will be instructed by Hofstra undergraduate and graduate students. The curriculum consists of approximately 12 lessons, with one lesson presented each week. Parent workshops will also be provided as part of the program. The program is funded through a generous grant from Capital One Bank.

“Ladder to Leadership,” a program designed by the Zarb School of Business and its Zarb Women in Business graduate organization, was formally launched at a tea at the Hofstra University Club.  More than 75 young women from Uniondale High School were introduced to the program, which aims to establish mentoring relationships between these students and ZWiB members.  Female executives from Flushing Savings Bank, the program sponsor, also attended the tea.

On April 27, 2011, the Zarb School hosted the 43rd annual induction ceremony of the Theta of New York Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma. James P. Neelankavil, Ph.D., Robert E. Brockway Distinguished Professor of Marketing and International Business, was the Chapter Honoree and Farrokh Nasri, Ph.D., professor of information technology and quantitative methods, was the faculty inductee. Eleven juniors, 12 seniors and 54 M.B.A. students were inducted.

May 2:  The Zarb Alumni Association Hosts a Networking Reception for Graduating Students

The Zarb Alumni Association (ZAA) welcomed graduating students to their organization.  The networking reception gave students the opportunity to build connections with established alumni. Dean Patrick Socci spoke to alumni and students about the importance of staying involved with the Zarb School following graduation.

May 2: The National Association of Black Accountants Hosts Annual Dinner

The National Association of Black Accountants, Inc. held a successful event at their Hofstra University Chapter fourth annual membership dinner.   The guest speaker at the event was Arlene Isaacs-Low, CPA, CFA, senior vice president of Moody’s Investors Service.

May 10:  The Association of Latino Professionals in Finance and Accounting (ALPFA) Hosts a Panel Discussion on “Your First Step Toward Success”

At its first event after its establishment on the Hofstra campus, ALPFA hosted a discussion where panelists shared their personal reflections on success.  Moderated by Gioia P. Bales, assistant dean, the group discussed such topics as: “Connections, Networking and the Elevator-Pitch,” “From Interview to Internship & Landing an Offer,” and “Career Paths, Obstacles, and Success.”  The keynote speaker for the event was Javier Lora (B.B.A. ’98), financial representative, Northwestern Mutual Financial Network.

The spring induction ceremony for Beta Alpha Psi, the National Honors Fraternity for Financial Information Professionals, was held May 12, 2011, at the Swan Club in Sea Cliff. The event was sponsored by PwC. Neil Cotty (B.B.A. '76), chief accounting officer of the Bank of America Corporation, was the guest speaker. Seventeen new Zarb students were inducted and 17 awards were presented.

The Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University®, in partnership with New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, hosted the third Local Government Leadership Institute on May 19, 2011. The Institute’s goal is to inform and challenge local government leaders through constructive engagement on regional issues. The presentation included a keynote address in the morning by Thomas P. DiNapoli (B.B.A. ’76 ), a Zarb alumnus, and a luncheon keynote address by New York State Lt. Governor Robert Duffy.

Steve Linehan, in his presentation, “The Economic Recovery: The Challenges in Attaining Escape Velocity” spoke on the prospects for a worldwide economic recovery and discussed issues surrounding the economic recovery, including financial regulations shaping the banking industry, health care reform and the national debt. As treasurer, Mr. Linehan is responsible for Capital One’s overall balance sheet management and interest rate risk strategy and for coordination of its global funding. In addition, he manages relationships with the company’s bank group and rating agencies and is responsible for all communication with the company’s investors.

The Wilbur F. Breslin Center for Real Estate Studies and the Institute of Real Estate at Hofstra University hosted a scholarship luncheon and presentation featuring David Wolkoff, principal, Heartland Business Center. Mr. Wolkoff overseas the acquisition, financing and management and development of major real estate projects, including a $4 billion project that will transform an abandoned hospital property into a 451-acre development.

July 12: Zarb School Hosts Special Session During First-Year Orientation

The Zarb School of Business extended a special welcome to the Class of 2015 by hosting receptions during first-year orientations beginning in June through July 12, 2011. New students enjoyed meeting Zarb faculty and administrators and engaging in a lively business trivia competition.

September 15-18: Zarb Women in Business Attend National Conference

National Association of Women MBAs hosted its Annual Conference and Career Fair in Texas this year.
